Supporting Healthcare
Barbados Ball Canada Aid's objects include a commitment to provide financial assistance to organizations that provide healthcare programs or services for the benefit of Barbadians in Canada or Barbados. Consistent with this object BBCA has donated CAD$124,300 to healthcare services in Canada and Barbados to date. This includes cash donations totalling CAD$20,000 to Black C.A.P, C.A.R.E Barbados and UWI HARP, dialysis and laboratory equipment costing some CAD$54,300 to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and CAD$50,000 to the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative.
The SickKids-Caribbean Initiative, launched by SickKids Foundation in February, 2013, is aimed at improving diagnoses and outcomes for children affected by paediatric cancers and serious blood disorders in the Caribbean. The Initiative will help build health care capacity in Barbados, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and The Bahamas, by training health professionals, providing consultation and diagnostic expertise, and developing and expanding access to treatment and supportive care.
BBCA has donated CAD$50,000 to the SickKids-Caribbean Foundation directly and through The Barbados Canada Foundation to assist in the setting up of a telemedicine unit in Barbados and to fund the training of Barbadian nurses and laboratory technicians at SickKids Hospital. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the only general hospital in Barbados is now over 40 years old and like all hospitals has ongoing needs for facility and equipment upgrading. In 2010 Barbados Ball Canada Aid made a commitment to assist in the provision of quality healthcare to Barbadians in Barbados and Canada by supporting the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, as well as a Toronto area hospital.

It is “committed to being the voice of the HIV/AIDS community by educating, rehabilitating, motivating and networking persons living with HIV/AIDS, to reassure self-respect, improve the quality of life and make valuable contributions to society by minimizing the impact of HIV/AIDS on the wider society.”
UWI HARP is the University of the West Indies HIV/AIDS Response Program. Its mission is ‘to build and harness capacity within the University in order to contribute maximally to the national, regional and international effort to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to mitigate the impact of the epidemic on the university itself and on the wider society.’ Established in August of 2001, UWI HARP has a branch and UWI HARP Chair on each of the University of the West Indies’ three campuses.
