Supporting Healthcare
Our objects include a commitment to provide financial assistance to organizations that provide healthcare programs or services for the benefit of Barbadians in Canada or Barbados and consistent with this object, we have donated CAD$48,000 to healthcare services in Canada and Barbados to date. Cash donations totalling CAD$20,000 were made to Black C.A.P, C.A.R.E Barbados and UWI HARP; and dialysis equipment costing some CAD$28,000 donated to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Black C.A.P is a Toronto based registered charity formed in 1987. Its mission is to reduce the spread of HIV infection within Black communities and to enhance the quality of life of Black people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.
C.A.R.E Barbados is a registered charity formed in 1998 in Barbados. It is “committed to being the voice of the HIV/AIDS community by educating, rehabilitating, motivating and networking persons living with HIV/AIDS, to reassure self-respect, improve the quality of life and make valuable contributions to society by minimizing the impact of HIV/AIDS on the wider society.”
UWI HARP is the University of the West Indies HIV/AIDS Response Program. Its mission is ‘to build and harness capacity within the University in order to contribute maximally to the national, regional and international effort to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to mitigate the impact of the epidemic on the university itself and on the wider society.’ Established in August of 2001, UWI HARP has a branch and UWI HARP Chair on each of the University of the West Indies’ three campuses. Membership of UWI HARP includes staff and students from across the region and includes non-campus territories, as well as invited members from government and non-governmental organizations.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the only general hospital in Barbados is now over 40 years old and like all hospitals has ongoing needs for facility and equipment upgrading. In 2010 Barbados Ball Canada Aid made a commitment to assist in the provision of quality healthcare to Barbadians in Barbados and Canada by supporting the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, as well as a Toronto area hospital.
